★a chip off the old block
今日は、新年に見るのにはピッタリの映画「遠い空の向こうに（
October Sky）」からです。

He's a chip off the old block. It's good to have you back.

炭坑で働くお父さんが事故に遭ってしまい、一家を支えるために、今度
は自分が炭坑で働くことになる主人公ホーマー。怪我がよくなって職場
に復帰したお父さんが、息子の働きぶりを部下に尋ねるシーンです。「
a chip off the old block」には、「性格・外見・行い等が父親（親）
にそっくりな息子（子）」と言う意味があるのです。「chip-off-the-
old-block」とハイフンで結ばれて表記されていることもよくあります。
炭坑で働くことだけが人生の父にそっくりだと言うことは、誉めている
ということですね。この場合を訳せば、「オヤジ譲りの働き者だよ」く
らいでしょうか。
新年に見るのにピッタリと書いたのは、映画のストーリーです。小さな
炭坑の町の少年達が、ロケットを作るという大きな夢を持ち、くじけな
がらも自分を信じて道を切り開いていく。心の底から感動できるのも、
主人公「Homer Hickam」の「Roket Boys」という自伝にもとづいている
から。今年の抱負や、夢がありますか？私には今、「夢」と言えるもの
が残念ながらありません。こんな映画を見ると、毎日流されて生きてい
る自分が情けなく思えたり、夢に向かって頑張っている人がうやらまし
く思えたり。もうだめかなーなんて夢を諦めかけちゃった時、自分を奮
い立たせたい時、新鮮な気分の新年に是非見て欲しい映画です。もちろ
ん、英語の勉強の為にも。

アメリカでは、1月第3月曜が、マーティン・ルーサー・キング・Jrの祝
日です。今年は、ちょうど誕生日の15日にあたります。彼がどんな人物
だったかは、みなさん多少なりともご存知だと思います。Martin
Luther King Jr.は、米国の黒人運動指導者であり、牧師でした。人権
擁護の為に尽くし、1964年には、ノーベル平和賞を受賞。1963年、ワシ
ントンDCのリンカーンメモリアルでの演説、Freedom Now "I Have a
Dream"は、歴史に残るとても有名な演説です。私は、アメリカの大学の
クラスで読んだり、聞いたりしました。キング牧師の名前の付いたス
トリート、建物、図書館などは、アメリカのいたることろにあります。
このスピーチは良く映画、ドラマ、コメディなどで、もじって使われた
りもします。時には口調も真似して。ですから、原文がどんなものかを
知っていると、内容もより楽しめます。以下に、スピーチの抜粋を掲載
しますので、この機会に読んでみてください。
"I Have a Dream" 音声
Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I say to you today
my friends - so even though we face the difficulties of today
and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted
in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live
